If your May Social Security deposit seems smaller than expected youโre not alone. Many seniors across the U.S. are voicing concern after seeing less in their direct deposit this month, despite the recent 2.5% cost of living adjustment (COLA).
So, whatโs going on?
The reason isnโt a glitch or mistake. In most cases, it comes down to Medicare Part B premiums. For 2025, the standard Part B monthly premium is about $185, and for many retirees, that amount is automatically deducted from their Social Security check.
What this means:
Even though your gross benefit may have gone up slightly due to the COLA increase, your net payment may be lower, especially if you had premium adjustments or changes in income-related Medicare charges.
When payments are arriving:
Depending on your birthdate, your May 2025 payment is scheduled for:
- May 14 (born 1stโ10th)
- May 21 (born 11thโ20th)
- May 28 (born 21stโ31st)
What you can do:
- Log in to your my Social Security account to view your full benefit breakdown, including deductions: https://www.ssa.gov/myaccount/
- Review your Medicare premiums and see if youโre being charged more due to income-related adjustments (IRMAA).
- If you believe thereโs an error, you can contact SSA at 1-800-772-1213.
While itโs frustrating, these changes are normal and understanding the math behind the check can help reduce worry.
